The
City Court of Baker was established by L.R.S. 13:2488.21. Its territorial
jurisdiction extends throughout the city of Baker. The court is composed
of the Judge, Mark Plaisance, the Clerk of Court, Delbra Pointer, the
City Marshall, Sid Gautreaux, and other personnel that are necessary
for the proper operation of the court.
The city court processes civil, criminal, and traffic matters. The types
of civil claims include personal injury, contract, and landlord-tenant
cases up to $25,000, as well as small-claims cases of $3,000 or less.
The type of criminal cases handled by the court are misdemeanor offenses
which are generally punishable by a fine of not more than $1,000 and/or
a jail tem of not more than six months.
The city court also serves an extension of the EBR Parish's Clerk of
Court in that citizens are able to obtain marriage licenses and other
limited services at the clerk's office.
The court operates its own adult probation department. This department
provides a structured correctional and crime prevention program that
seeks to reduce the number of repeat offenders, which is accomplished
by intensive supervision, treatment, and education of offenders.
The City Court of Baker strives to provide the public with an efficient
and convenient access to justice.
